Man killed, three others hurt in Phoenix crash involving garbage truck | FOX 10 Phoenix

PHOENIX - A crash involving several cars, including a garbage truck, killed a man and badly injured several others in Phoenix on Monday afternoon.

The crash happened around 4 p.m. on Oct. 28 near 40th Street and Cactus Road. It involved two cars and a Waste Management garbage truck.

The Phoenix Fire Department says one of the drivers needed to be extricated from a car, and ultimately, a 44-year-old man named John McLaughlin, died in the crash.

Three others were taken to the hospital. A man and child are in critical condition and another man is stable.

Phoenix Police gave a bit more information on what possibly happened, saying, "Preliminary information suggests that the truck driven by McLaughlin was northbound on 40th Street when, for unknown reasons, it veered into oncoming southbound lanes and ran a red light at Cholla Street. Just after crossing Cholla Street, the truck collided with a small SUV, which was traveling southbound and was occupied by an adult male and juvenile male. The truck continued north until it struck a Waste Management truck, occupied by an adult male, and came to rest. After being hit by the truck, the smaller SUV went off road and struck a nearby wall."
