MEMPHIS, Tenn. - Two people died and six others including a Memphis Police officer were injured after a stolen car crashed during a police chase that ended in Hickory Hill on Thursday, the department.

Memphis Police (MPD) said it all started just after 5 p.m., when officers responded to "criminal activity" on Global Drive near the Tennessee/Mississippi state line. They arrived there to find a suspect vehicle believed to a stolen Chrysler 300 in the area.

Officers tried to pull the car over but it took off, MPD said.

Police said that the vehicle struck several other cars at the intersection of Knight Arnold and Hickory Hill roads in Hickory Hill, sending four people to hospitals with non-critical injuries.

MPD said the stolen vehicle then struck a pole, killing two of the occupants. Another occupant in the car was rushed to a hospital in critical condition, police said.

MPD also said an officer was rushed to a hospital in non-critical condition.

Police said the Tennessee Highway Patrol has taken over the crash investigation.

No other details were released.

FOX13 spoke to one Hickory Hill resident at the scene who said that "if it weren't for the police, they would have gotten away." The resident continued, saying "after police rammed him, that’s when they hit a couple of the cars and that is when he started shooting at the police. He stood at the sunroof and that is when the police rammed him again and that is when he lost control and he hit the poles."
